Salt Dough Heart Ornaments

Make someone's Valentine with these cute handmade Salt Dough hearts strung on colorful ribbon!

This is one of our favorite kids craft ideas which is great to do at kids craft parties or birthday parties as it is non toxic and easy to make with ingredients you probably have already in your cupboards.

You'll need:
1 cup flour  (or use 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup corn flour for super white ornaments)
1/2 cup salt
1/3 cup water (more or less)

Just mix up the dough in a bowl by adding the salt to the flour (or flour/cornflour mix) and slowly adding the water to form the dough.

Knead until smooth on a floured surface then roll out so its about 1cm thick. You can hand mould the hearts or use a cookie cutter to give lovely symmetrical hearts and clean edges.

When done, gently place your hearts on a baking tray lined with a baking sheet dusted in flour. This is so the ornaments won't stick as they dry out.

Once on the tray, poke a small hole in the hearts so you can thread ribbon or twine through once they are baked.

Bake in a low oven (around 50-75 degrees celcius) for a couple of hours. The dough is baked once it is rock solid and when you tap it, it sounds hollow.
Craftea Tip! Before baking try varying the salt content in your salt dough or gently brushing the dough with some salt water mix (1:1 teaspoons of each and you can vary the quantities to get different shades) before cooking in the oven you can get beautifully rustic effects on the salt dough hearts. Just be careful not to wet the dough too much or it may burn too easily.

You could use a cookie cutter but the hand molded mismatched shapes adds a little quirky charm don't you think!
