Embrace the sticky fun and you cant go wrong with easy no bake recipe for a marshmallow Rice Krispie Cake shaped into Peppa Pig. All you need are 6 cheap & cheerful ingredients!!! Its quick to do too - although the moulding takes the longest time, but overall it only took 1hr to make.

Ingredients to make a large Peppa Pig Cake (feeds 15+)
  • 250-300g or a 1/2 box Rice Krispies
  • 4 x 200g bags large Marshmallows
  • 250g Butter

  • writing icing

Other things: 3 mixing bowls, 1 bowl for shaping the mix with, Seran Wrap/ Cling Film, Serving plate or tray, microwave, greaseproof baking paper and any other decorations you wish. I used some fruit loops to make the 2 shape and a clean paint brush to paint on some red food colouring for the cheek.

Optional Ideas: Edible glitter would be perfect to add some glitz to this DIY Peppa Cake!! Check out our recipe on our blog

I served up our cake with some muddy puddle cupcakes (from a Peppa Pig Mix Box) supplemented with some store bought vanilla icing. See - I told you I can't bake!!

DIY home made birthday cakes are something undoubtedly nostalgic and special. Didn't everyone's mum bake their cake themselves back when we were young? Or perhaps it just seemed that way!! In any event, its a tradition we try to continue in our family but with a child who adores Peppa Pig, a tight budget which meant commissioning a cake was out of the question, and lack of baking skills the stakes were high.
However, I felt I couldn't go wrong attempting a Peppa Pig shaped rice krispie cake - after all you just blitz it in the microwave and shape the gooey krispie mixture. It both was and wasn't this simple (as you'll see below) but honestly not too tough that I would honestly say there is No Talent Required. After making some seriously sticky marshmallow mess the night before her birthday, I think I did our tradition, and my daughter, proud!

Her face when she saw her Peppa cake and delight as she munched on the sugary sticky slices with her friends were just priceless, and worth the fact I'm still shampooing melted marshmallow from my hair two days later :o)

Here's how our DIY Peppa Pig Marshmallow Rice Krispie Cake is made ......
1. Line one bowl with cling film. (to help with moulding the mix later)
2. Melt the white chocolate and butter together in the microwave at low heat for short blasts.

3. Keep 2-4 White Marshmallows aside. Add remaining marshmallows to the bowl and melt them into the butter/choc mix using 30 second blasts. It wont take long - may be 2-3 30 second blasts at most.

... until all marshmallows are melted. Stir like mad to mix all together.

4. Split the mix into the following proportions in separate large bowls.
  • take out 3 tablespoons (for the boots) and place in separate bowl - add 1-2 drops yellow food colouring to make the boots, and mix well.

  • take out half the remainder for the head & arms & tail, and place in separate bowl. Add 1-2 drops of red food colouring if necessary (the marshmallow mix might be coloured light pink enough from the marshmallows) and mix well.

  • then keep the remainder for the body/dress. Add 5-6 drops red food colouring to make the red dress Peppa is known for.

5. Divide up the Rice Krispies
  • In the yellow bowl - add 3-4 handfuls Rice Krispies

  • Divide the rest of the Rice Krispies in half and add one half to the Pink mix

  • Add the other half to the Red mix
Mix like mad.  This is where it starts to get messy. The marshmallows gets sticky as it cools and as I thought I wasn't having much luck with the spoon - I got my hands in to mix it all up. Forgetting to pin my hair back I made the mistake of touching my head :o)

6. To make the dress, press the red mix into the cling film lined bowl.

Another messy part - there's no substitute for just getting your hands stuck in, but if you want to avoid sticky hands with rice krispies stuck to every finger, you can scoop up the mix with some greaseproof baking paper.

Press the mix down firmly, pushing it down with the greaseproof paper.

Take it out and place on the serving plate ready for shaping.

7. To make the  Head and Arms, take out 2 tablespoons of the light pink mix and set each tablespoon aside separately on two pieces of baking paper.

8. To make the head, repeat the same step as above with the remainder of the pink mix.

9. Turn out both bowls onto your serving plate and mould each part into the Head and Dress Shape using the greaseproof paper so the mix wont stick to your hands.

10. To make the Boots

Divide the yellow mix into 2. Spoon out one half onto a sheet of greaseproof paper mould (pressing the mix firmly together) into welly boot shapes between two layers of greaseproof paper. Leave to cool and set.

11. To make the hands & curly tail..

Divide the set aside light pink mix into three pieces and roll between 2 sheets of greaseproof paper to make the arms. Make sure to press the mix together firmly.

12. Once shaped and cooled, remove the greaseproof paper, assemble your Peppa Pig

Only on seeing it like this did I realise I had made too much of a neck (Peppa actually does not appear to have one), so had to cut out some of the mix once it cooled. Not ideal, but it demonstrated that you can always make adjustments afterwards.  You can even (to some extent) reshape parts by warming the mix in your hands and re-moulding. Good to know!

13. To make Peppa Pig's eyes, use the white marshmallows you set aside at the beginning. I had to chop mine in half as they were otherwise too bulgy but chopping it in half  actually helped the marshmallow to stick to the head! If you don't need to do this part, just stick on the marshmallow with some butter or a splodge of writing icing.

14. Draw Peppa's face using the writing icing. All that's really required is a smile, circle nose and 2 dots inside it.

15. Dot some black writing icing on the marshmallows for pupils.

16. Add any finishing touches you like.

My Peppa cake had several iterations - a green writing icing number 2 that then changed to a green fruit loop number 2 (I stuck on the fruit loops with some store bought icing I had on hand but butter or writing icing would stick them on too). I used a clean paint brush with some diluted red food coloring (1 drop coloring to 5 drops water) to paint on a round cheek onto Peppa's face.

I then changed the red dots in her nose for pink rainbow drops and outlined the ears with red writing icing for unknown reasons but sometimes its just hard to walk away from something! Knowing I would likely ruin it though if I tweaked anything else, I did eventually drag myself away from it, and left it somewhere dry and cool to set.

Like I mentioned above, you could go glitzy with some DIY home made edible glitter or any other edible decorations. However, after the hour, all I wanted to do was place on the candles, leave it be and wait to see my daughters face when she saw her 2nd birthday cake when she woke up in the morning!
