With some ingredients you already have in your cupboards, why not make some Valentines necklaces or Christmas tree ornaments from these cute little heart ornaments made from flour, salt & water! It's one of our favorite materials to make lots of kids craft ideas with as its non toxic for kids of any age to use, squishy & soft and so much fun for them to play with and make handmade memories which, if kept dry, will last forever once baked in the oven. You can see some of our other ideas that we made with this simple salt dough recipe here.
You'll need:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/4 cup water
baking sheet and baking paper
extra flour for dusting.
Mix the salt and plain flour and add the water slowly and mix so it
makes a firm dough.
Before I even got to adding the water my daughter wanted some of the action and began exploring the light and soft feel of flour in the large baking bowl!!!
Mould your ornament on a lightly floured baking sheet. I find it;s best to keep the salt dough designs as flat as
possible so it will dry out quicker when cooking. Don't forget to make a hole
in the top if you plan to hang it up!
Cook
it in the oven at about 50-100 Celcius
so the ornaments dry out slowly until they are rock hard and when you tap it,
it sounds hollow. Depending on the
thickness of your design the cooking may take 4-6 hours.
Once cool, get
painting with some non toxic paint then leave to dry and varnish if required.
Here are some cute pictures of Adelaide getting paint everywhere as she had a blast painting her decorations. She's only 18 months old but adored this kids craft activity which kept her busy and focused for almost an hour.
I used non toxic paints and just as well ....as she got them everywhere - even painting her own tummy!
And here are the one's my 18 month old daughter made... adorable!
